The Pioneers

From Paper to Pioneers in Ceramics

Our story began in the small Swabian town of Plochingen, Germany, with Feldmühle, founded in 1885 as a paper manufacturer. However, the aftermath of World War II reshaped our destiny. Stripped of its timber production facilities, Feldmühle faced a pivotal transformation. In 1951, we embraced innovation and resilience by launching Südplastik, Gummi- und Kunststoff-Verarbeitung GmbH.

1954

By 1954, Feldmühle had integrated Südplastik and the Keramik Gesellschaft, marking our entrance into high-performance ceramics — a sector that would define our legacy.

The strategic acquisition of Dynamit Nobel AG in 1960 further diversified our portfolio, blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.

1991

The year 1991 saw Feldmühle Nobel transition to an exclusive focus on what we do best — ceramics. This marked the birth of Cerasiv GmbH.

Notably, we chose to preserve the Feldmühle logo, the dynamic circle, as a symbol of continuity and a tribute to our rich heritage. This emblem has  adorned our BIOLOX® products since 1974, linking past innovation with present excellence.

The circle logo, used for the identification of our BIOLOX® products, represents more than just the company's historical roots in paper press manufacturing. It embodies the ongoing legacy of Feldmühle.

Incorporated into the serial number of our products, the logo serves as a symbol of quality and distinction. It signifies our commitment to excellence and reliability, marking each product as part of a long-standing tradition of pioneering solutions in medical technology.

This visual identity strengthens brand recognition and reassures surgeons and patients of the high standards they can expect from BIOLOX®.

A New Chapter in High-Performance Ceramics

Our enthusiasm for high-performance ceramics grew during the 1950s, leading us to explore various applications, including in the medical field.

In 1974, this exploration led to the registration of the BIOLOX® brand, marking the official start of our journey in medical bioceramics. Since then, BIOLOX® has become synonymous with quality and innovation in the production of ceramic components for joint replacement and beyond.

Half a Century of BIOLOX®: A Legacy of Excellence

Today, as BIOLOX® celebrates 50 transformative years, we are not just looking back to our past; we are actively shaping the future of bioceramics. Our journey from a paper company to a leader in ceramic technology demonstrates our commitment to innovation and excellence.
