On Friday, October 23, 2026, the Heinz Mittelmeier Award will be presented at DKOU. With it, the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC) honors research and innovation that paves the way for metal-free orthopaedics and trauma surgery. This can include new implant solutions made of ceramics, polymers or other metal-free materials, as well as surface modifications, MRI-compatible implants, and health-economic and clinical analyses. The award carries a prize of €5,000 and is supported by CeramTec.
Its story goes back to 1996, when it was first presented at the German Orthopaedic Congress as the "BIOLOX Award of the DGOOC", donated by CeramTec AG, Medical Division. Today it is awarded every year at DKOU and is open to young physicians, engineers and scientists up to the age of 45.
