BIOLOX®delta CoC resurfacing could ease the burden of follow-up costs

First study outlines potential cost advantage of ceramic resurfacing follow-up protocols over metal resurfacing.

As ceramic materials become more common in hip resurfacing and other joint replacement procedures, surgeons are asking:

Can ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) resurfacing retain their benefits and eliminate metal-related issues – all without breaking the bank?

Dr. Thomas W. Wainwright and a team from Bournemouth University and the University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust offer an answer. Their new study compares the best-case economic and logistical demands of follow-up care for BIOLOX®delta CoC hip resurfacing and metal-on-metal (MoM) resurfacing, based on UK protocol and National Joint Registry data.

Study standouts:

  • 2023 NJR Report: 41,886 MoM resurfacings, 269 CoC recorded
  • 2023: 700 hip resurfacings /year
  • 83.5% survival expected after 25 years
  • MoM: Follow-up includes
  • Clinic review at 6 weeks post-op
  • Clinical, biochemical, and X-ray review at 1, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, and 25 years post-op
  • CoC: Follow-up includes
  • Clinic review at 6 weeks post-op
  • Clinical and X-ray review at 1, 5, and 10 years post-op
  • CoC protocol lifetime follow-up cost: £802.50
  • MoM protocol lifetime follow-up cost: £2,132.83
  • Projected costs at the national economic level (based on 700 resurfacing/year)
  • MoM resurfacing induces annual national cost: £1,492,981
  • CoC resurfacing induces annual national cost: £561,750

Takeaway:

Delta CoC hip resurfacing follow-up was found to be 2.6x more affordable than follow-up for the same procedure with MoM components, with a switch projected to save £931,231 per 25-year follow up. Meanwhile, MoM incurred more follow-up reviews, a higher cost of surveillance, and an increased risk of revision.

We know that safe and effective materials at an attainable price point are top priority for surgeons and patients. We also know that the longer implants last, the more worthwhile the investment – and that’s why we’re proud that, as evidence continues to be gathered, BIOLOX®delta continues to deliver.
